Mumbai Indians
Owned by Reliance Industries and captained by cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians are the most watched team in the IPL. However, their popularity has yet to lead them to success in the first three years of the competition so they will be more eager than ever to make a big impression this year. They head into the new season with an excellent squad and stand as the bookies favourites to capture the trophy on 28th May.
Performances
In the 2008 IPL, the Indians just failed to make the knock-out stages, finishing 5th by one point after winning seven and losing seven matches. The 2009 IPL was even more disappointing, with the team only managing 7th place, winning just five of their 14 matches. They had a fantastic 2010 season, racing through the group stage and marching to the final where they were finished runners-up to the Chennai Super Kings by just 22 runs.
Squad
The Mumbai Indians have managed to keep the core of the team together, including the World Cup stars Sachin Tendulkar and Lasith Malinga, whose performances will be pivotal if the team is to go one step better this year and win the tournament.
Their biggest purchase at the 2011 IPL Auction was Rohit Sharma for $2m. The 23-year-old will be desperate to put in some impressive performances in order to catch the eye of the national team selectors. Two other key signings include the all rounder James Franklin and wicket keeper Davy Jacobs.
