IPL - New Playing Format
The format for the new IPL season has changed due to the inclusion of two new teams, taking the number of teams from eight to ten. The new format means that the teams will be split into two groups of five teams, with each team playing home and away games against the other four teams in their group. However, to slightly confuse matters the teams will all be ranked together in a combined league table where they will play four of the other groups five teams once (either home or away). They will then play both home and away games against the fifth team of the other group.
A random draw will decide how the teams are grouped and with whom they play once and twice across the groups.
The winner of the combined league will play against the league runners-up in the First Play-off match, whilst the Second Play-off match will be between the league's third and fourth placed teams. The winner of the First Play-off will automatically qualify for the Final on 28th May. The losers of the First play-off will get a second stab at making the final as they will compete against the winner of the Second Play-off, with the winners progressing through to the Grand Finale.
Players
Each Franchise is free to select its own team and there are several ways that they can acquire players; via the annual auction, buying domestic players and signing uncapped players. The basic rules for team composition are thus:
- Minimum squad strength of 16 players plus one coach and one medic.
- No more than 10 foreign players in the squad with no more than four playing in a game.
- Eight local players must be included in each squad.
- At least two under 22 players from the BCCI in each squad
The IPL has attracted many of the finest players in the world, many ofwhom feature on either the Top IPL Batsman tables or the IPL Top Bowlers.
